Ames, Iowa says:
We went on a chilly day and there were probably 100 or more manatees gathered in the warm water from the power plant. It was really exciting for us to see so many manatees up close and swimming in the water. There are informational signs and photos around explaining about manatees and what to watch for I never knew manatees have toenails on their flippers. One flipped over and I was able to observe the toenails shortly after reading the sign about that. There is also a nature path to walk along the mangroves and down to the river. Sometimes you can see gators sunning themselves. It was a real treat to see so many manatees so close, as the observation areas are very close to where the manatees gather in the warm water.
The Manatee park is conveniently located just off Hwy 75, on State Road 80. An opportunity to see manatees in their natural habitat. The manatees gather near the warm waters of the power plant in cooler weather. You can kayak alongside the manatees.
